Absence Procedures
We would like to make sure that you are aware of the procedures for absences at McKinney ISD.
· Within 3 days of your child's return to school, an absentee note must be turned in. All notes must be submitted to the Front or Grade level offices within this 3 day period. Medical notes from a doctor will be accepted at any time.
· For any class period during the day that your child was absent, you must turn in an excuse; even when you are signing them out at the front office.
· If your child is absent and you would like for your child's teachers to know, you can e-mail them directly.
· If you have any questions or concerns regarding an absence in any class, please e-mail the teacher directly in order for any correction to be made.
We hope this helps explain the procedures and answers any questions you may have about attendance and absences.
McKinney Independent School District Updated Secondary Grading Guidelines
2017-2018 Grading Policy Guidelines (Effective October 21, 2013):
· In accordance with EIA (LOCAL) “ … a student shall be permitted a reasonable opportunity to redo an assignment or retake a test for which the student received a grade of 80 or lower.”
· The retest/redo must be completed within 5 school days following the return of the assessment to the student.
· A student must attend at least one tutoring session with the student’s teacher (or an appropriate designee within the department) prior to the retest/redo.
· A grade of 80 is the highest possible grade on any retest/redo.
· The highest grade of the two (original or retest/redo) will be counted.
· If the original assessment was given the last week of the grading period and reasonable opportunity to retest/redo is not available, the grade can be taken for the next marking period.
· Test corrections are not an allowable retest opportunity. Instead these will be part of the tutorial preparation for the retest/redo.
· Retest/redo for assessments can only be done to support mastery learning.
· Only one retest/redo is allowable per assignment (i.e. there is additional retest/redo).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
District-wide grading and reporting practices were identified as a secondary district improvement initiative during the 2008-2009 school year for five primary reasons:
1. To improve alignment of grading and reporting practices with district-wide curricular, instructional, and assessment philosophies and practices.
2. To reduce the variance in grading practices within and among secondary grade levels and courses.
3. To prepare students for upcoming changes in the state accountability system.
4. To address the 2009 Commissioner’s Rule and SB 2033.
5. To align our grading practices with current research and best practice and to better prepare students.
Additional practices have been put in place for the 2014-2015 school year as we recognize that all students have the ability to learn, they learn in different ways and timeframes and that errors are inherent in the learning process.
